“Each day, I try to provide some encouraging words to the staff. I let them know that I’m always available to help them in any way.”

Thomaston, Georgia

February 2021

My name is Ricky Harris and I’ve been a resident of Volunteers of America Southeast’s program in Thomaston, Georgia for 16 years now. I am grateful to have a place that provides housing and support and programs that I need. I am also grateful to be able to live independently and at such a great place. I really love it here.

Each day, I try to provide some encouraging words to the staff. I let them know that I’m always available to help them in any way. I try to encourage them. I enjoy being helpful to others and providing words of wisdom and encouragement. I have a happy life and I want to make sure everyone around me is happy too.

I really like it when they have safety drills and I like to participate in every detail of the drill. After 16 years of safety drills, I think I know more about the details than some of the staff! I want to be helpful and make sure everyone knows the drills and that we’re all safe.

I’m also interested in staying healthy. I learned a long time ago that walking is great for maintaining good health so I try to walk as often as possible. Each day I work on my goal of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

VOA Southeast is not only my home but it’s also my family. I know the people here care about me and I care about them as well.

One of the staff said, “It’s an honor to be able to serve such an awesome person as Ricky!” That made my day.
